History of the University of Liverpool
The University of Liverpool, founded in 1881 as University College Liverpool, was established to provide higher education in the city. It became part of the Victoria University in 1884. In 1894, the world’s first public radio transmission system was born at the University of Liverpool, and two years later, X-rays were first used in surgery in the UK at the University of Liverpool. In 1899, Liverpool University Press was established as one of the three oldest university publishers in England. The University of Liverpool was granted its own Royal Charter in 1903, becoming an independent university. Known as the original “red brick” university, it was a pioneer of civic universities in England.
